Banff Info & What to Bring Lists

Getting Here

Calgary International Airport is located 75 miles east of Banff and is served by most major airlines. Located at the airport are shuttle companies and most major car rental agencies. Shuttles depart 7 days a week from the airport, multiple times daily. It is important to call or check out online and confirm all shuttle departure times and prices. Banff is approximately a 1.5 hour drive from the Calgary Airport.

If you are planning on driving into Banff National Park, please be prepared to pay an entrance fee at the park gates. The 2011 daily rates for an individual is $9.80/adult or a group rate of $19.60 (up to 7 people in a vehicle). Please be sure to ask about an annual rate (you may save some money) if you are planning on being in the park for 7 days or longer. Note: Your Wilderness Pass fee is a backcountry user fee and does not cover your park entrance.

Accommodation Options

Although it is a small mountain town, Banff offers you a large variety of lodging choices - over 5000 rooms! However, during the summer season Banff is very heavily booked. We strongly advise you to book well in advance. We do recommend that you spend the night before your trip in Banff.

For those folks wanting to pitch a tent or park a motor home, Banff has two large campgrounds Tunnel Mountain Campground, situated on top of Tunnel Mountain and about a 5-minute drive to downtown, and Two Jack Lake Campground, located about 20 minutes from Banff. Reservations are accepted for Tunnel Mtn Campground by calling 1.877.RESERVE or by visiting www.pccamping.ca. Two Jack Lake is first come first serve basis for reservations.

Banff Accommodation Reservations: Free of charge to you, this company will help you find and reserve any room in town. 1-877-226-3348.

What To Bring

The links below outline the items you NEED to bring with you depending on which trip you've chosen. It is essential that our guests be prepared for all kinds of mountain weather. We have had many years of personal experience dealing with Mother Nature up here, so please take our list to heart.

Mother Nature can be unpredictable up here in the mountains, so our guests need to come prepared for every type of weather. Clothing that is easily layered works the best. You can always remove what you don't need, but you still have it just in case. Also, bring your most comfortable gear -- this is not the time to break-in new boots or a new hat.

Average Temperature

Month High Low
June 19C / 66F 5C / 41F
July 22C / 71F 7C / 45F
August 22C / 70F 7C / 44F
September 16C / 60F 3C / 38F
**These are average temperatures at an elevation of 4538 feet.
Temperatures will drop at higher elevations.

When packing your gear, keep in mind it is being packed out on a mule and our animal's comfort is very important to us. By following these guidelines you can help us ensure that. You must pack your gear in soft-sided, cloth or nylon bag. It can not have any hard edges, frames or wheels. Your gear is restricted to a Total maximum weight of 30 lbs. Your coat, rain gear, hat and gloves are packed separately from your duffel and are either worn or tied with saddle strings to the back of your saddle. Saddlebags, rain gear and other essentials that you are taking on your horse with you are not included in the 30lb weight restriction. If you would like to bring saddlebags (we don't supply them), please fill them with only those essential items that you would need during the day, such as lip balm, your camera, sunscreen, etc. We reserve the right to limit the amount of gear in the saddlebags for weight. Fanny packs (a small pack that ties around the waist) also work well. Daypacks, backpacks or other bags are NOT allowed -- they are hard on your back and hard on the horse's back, and do not tie properly to the saddle. All backcountry guests receive a 10% discount on all regular prices items (except cards/books) at the Trail Rider Store.

Equipment Rental

We have a limited supply of saddlebags for rent for $2/day, slickers for $7/day and ground tarps (not required for lodge trips) for $5/day. We recommend you reserve these items as soon as possible as they do book out. These are available for pick up upon check-in (sorry, no earlier).

Bactrax/Snowtips rent out the basic camping gear and house a variety of sleeping bags, duffle bags, thermo-rest sleeping pads, etc. Located at 225 Bear Street, they are just a block away from The Trail Rider Store were you'll check-in the morning of your trip. Email Bactrax/Snowtips at snowtips@telusplanet.net or visit their website at www.snowtips-bactrax.com for information. If you would prefer to contact them by telephone, they can be reached at (403) 762-8177, or fax at (403) 760-6289.
